ACDF is the gold-standard procedure for treating cervical radiculopathy (pinched nerves in the neck) and cervical spondylosis. When a disc in the neck ruptures, it presses against the spinal cord or exiting nerve roots, causing shooting pain, electric tingling, and severe weakness down the shoulders and arms. Approaching the spine from the front (anterior) allows the surgeon direct access to the disc without disturbing the thick muscle groups of the back of the neck, leading to much faster recovery times for international patients.
Dettagli della Procedura
The patient is placed under general anesthesia. A small 2-inch horizontal incision is made in a natural skin crease on the front of the neck. The surgeon gently moves the windpipe and esophagus aside to reach the spine. The damaged disc and any bone spurs are completely removed under microscopic view. A bone graft or synthetic cage is inserted into the empty space, and a small titanium plate is screwed over the front of the two vertebrae to stabilize the neck.
