Endoscopic Transsphenoidal Surgery is the preferred, state-of-the-art method for removing pituitary adenomas—tumors situated at the base of the brain just behind the nose. Pituitary tumors can cause severe hormonal imbalances (like Cushing's disease or Acromegaly) and frequently press against the optic nerves, threatening permanent blindness. Instead of opening the top of the skull, a combined team of an ENT surgeon and a Neurosurgeon works directly through the nostrils. This approach leaves zero visible facial scars, preserves healthy brain tissue by avoiding brain retraction, and ensures a dramatically faster, less painful recovery for international patients.
Details zum Verfahren
Under general anesthesia, the ENT surgeon inserts a high-definition endoscope through the nostril, traveling to the back of the nasal cavity to open the sphenoid sinus bone. Once the floor of the skull is breached, the neurosurgeon takes over, cutting the dura covering to expose the pituitary gland. Using specialized micro-curettes, the tumor is carefully scooped out and removed. To prevent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage, the floor of the skull is reconstructed using a small patch of fat harvested from the patient’s abdomen or a nasal tissue flap, sealed with biological glue.
