Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) is the most advanced and effective treatment for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). As men age, the prostate grows and chokes the urethra, causing weak urine flow, frequent nighttime urination, and bladder damage. Unlike older scraping methods (TURP) that struggle with very large prostates and cause significant bleeding, HoLEP uses a high-powered Holmium laser to cleanly peel the entire obstructing lobe of the prostate away from its capsule. Because the laser perfectly seals blood vessels as it cuts, it is exceptionally safe for elderly patients taking blood thinners. It boasts the lowest recurrence rate of any BPH surgery.
Détails de l'intervention
Performed under spinal or general anesthesia. No cuts are made on the outside of the body. The urologist passes a specialized camera (resectoscope) through the tip of the penis into the urethra. The Holmium laser fiber is deployed to meticulously carve out the bulky prostate tissue lobes. Once detached, these large tissue chunks are pushed into the bladder. A device called a morcellator is then inserted to safely grind up and suction out the tissue so it can be sent to pathology to rule out hidden cancer.
