Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty are life-changing procedures for elderly patients suffering from severe vertebral compression fractures due to osteoporosis or spinal tumors. When a weakened vertebra collapses, it creates a wedge shape, causing agonizing pain and a hunched posture. Instead of enduring months of bed rest, patients can undergo this minimally invasive procedure. Kyphoplasty specifically uses a micro-balloon inflated inside the bone to restore lost height before injecting fast-hardening PMMA bone cement. The cement internally casts the broken bone, providing immediate structural integrity and near-instant pain relief.
Detalles del Procedimiento
Performed in a Cath Lab under local anesthesia and light sedation. With the patient lying face down, the surgeon uses real-time X-ray (fluoroscopy) to guide a hollow bone needle through the back and into the fractured vertebra. (In Kyphoplasty, a balloon is inflated to create a cavity and restore height). Liquid bone cement is carefully injected into the bone. The cement hardens in 15 minutes. The needle is removed, leaving only a tiny puncture mark.
