Oral Cancer (Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the tongue, cheek, or jaw) requires aggressive, life-saving surgical removal. However, cutting out large sections of the jawbone or tongue leaves the patient unable to speak, swallow, or maintain a normal facial appearance. India is a global leader in treating oral cancer due to the sheer volume of cases managed by its surgical oncologists and maxillofacial surgeons. In a single, massive operation, the cancer is removed, and the defect is instantly rebuilt using a "Microvascular Free Flap." The surgeon harvests a piece of bone and skin from the patient’s lower leg (fibula) or forearm, shapes it to form a new jaw or tongue, and uses a microscope to connect its tiny blood vessels to the blood vessels in the neck.
Dettagli della Procedura
A highly complex 8 to 12-hour surgery under general anesthesia involving two surgical teams. Team 1: The Onco-surgeon performs a composite resection, removing the tumor along with affected jawbone, tongue, and neck lymph nodes (neck dissection). Team 2: Simultaneously, the reconstructive surgeon harvests the fibula bone (from the leg) along with its blood vessels. The fibula is cut and folded to mimic the shape of the jaw, secured with a titanium reconstruction plate, and its blood vessels are intricately sutured to the neck arteries and veins under a high-powered microscope to keep the new tissue alive.
