Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) represents the pinnacle of modern kidney stone management. Patients travel for this procedure to avoid the pain and bleeding associated with traditional back-puncture surgeries. RIRS is ideal for medium-sized kidney stones or stones trapped in hard-to-reach lower chambers of the kidney. Using a highly advanced, ultra-thin flexible digital ureteroscope, the urologist navigates through the body's natural urinary tract—up the urethra, through the bladder, up the ureter, and directly into the intricate plumbing of the kidney. Once the stone is located on the HD monitor, a Holmium or Thulium laser is fired to pulverize it into fine dust that naturally washes out in the urine.
Details van de procedure
Conducted under general or spinal anesthesia. A flexible fiber-optic scope is passed through the urethra into the kidney without any surgical cuts. The laser fiber (the thickness of a hair) is passed through the scope to blast the stone. A tiny wire basket may be used to pull out larger fragments. Finally, a temporary soft plastic tube (DJ stent) is placed inside the ureter to keep the pathway open and allow the stone dust to flush out comfortably over the next week.
