Spinal Tumor Excision is a critical, complex surgery requiring the expertise of elite neuro-spine surgeons. Tumors growing inside the spinal column (like meningiomas, schwannomas, or metastatic lesions) compress the spinal cord, threatening permanent paralysis, loss of bowel control, and severe pain. India is a preferred destination for this delicate procedure due to its world-class neuro-oncology boards, advanced high-magnification surgical microscopes, ultrasonic tumor aspirators, and continuous Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) that maps nerve signals in real-time to ensure no healthy nerve tissue is damaged during tumor extraction.
Procedure Details
Under general anesthesia, the spine is opened from the back (laminectomy) to expose the spinal canal. If the tumor is inside the protective membrane, the surgeon uses micro-scissors to open the dura mater. Guided by an HD microscope, an ultrasonic aspirator (which vibrates and liquefies the tumor without tugging on tissue) is used to meticulously separate the tumor from the delicate spinal cord. The dura is stitched watertight, and the spine is stabilized with hardware if necessary.
