The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) acts as a sliding hinge connecting the jawbone to the skull. When this joint is destroyed by severe osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, or ankylosis (where the joint bones fuse completely together, leaving the patient unable to open their mouth), Total TMJ Replacement is the only cure. This is a highly specialized procedure performed by elite maxillofacial surgeons. Using a 3D CT scan of the patient's skull, a custom-fitted artificial joint (prosthesis) made of titanium and high-density plastic is 3D-printed to match their exact anatomy. This restores the ability to chew, speak, and live without excruciating facial pain.
Procedure Details
Performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision in front of the ear (similar to a facelift incision) and a second small incision under the angle of the lower jaw. The damaged, fused, or arthritic condyle (jaw joint head) and the socket (fossa) are carefully removed. The custom-milled artificial titanium socket is screwed into the skull base, and the titanium jaw component is screwed into the lower jawbone. The joint is tested for smooth mobility, and the incisions are meticulously closed to minimize scarring.
