For the 30% of epilepsy patients whose violent, debilitating seizures cannot be controlled by medication (refractory epilepsy), surgery is the only path to a normal life. Families worldwide travel to India's specialized Comprehensive Epilepsy Centers for these complex interventions. Depending on exhaustive preoperative brain mapping (Video EEG, PET scans), the neurosurgeon performs a Resective Surgery (like a Temporal Lobectomy or Lesionectomy) to physically remove the tiny, scarred portion of the brain causing the electrical electrical storms. If the seizure origin cannot be safely removed, a Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) is implanted in the chest to continuously send mild electrical pulses to the brain, effectively short-circuiting seizures before they start.
تفاصيل الإجراء
For Resection: Under general or awake anesthesia, a craniotomy is performed to access the brain. Using intraoperative EEG monitoring to pinpoint the exact seizure focal point, the surgeon meticulously resects the malfunctioning tissue while strictly preserving areas controlling speech, memory, and movement.

For VNS Implant: A daycare outpatient procedure where a small pacemaker-like device is implanted under the skin of the left chest. A wire is threaded under the skin to the neck and wrapped around the left vagus nerve.
